Why I do what I do

I believe that stories are one of the best ways to learn how people choose to be, consciously or unconsciously (and our unconscious usually has the biggest guiding hand). Reading, writing, and watching great narratives has been the safe space for me to learn about others and myself. I love re-consuming stories on the page or the screen because I notice how I grow and change: do I still like this character? Do I still identify with them? Do I sympathize more with characters I disliked the first time around? Studying narratives has made me more patient, compassionate, and imaginative. When we lean into other people’s experiences (fictional or not) we can do the work of recognizing what triggers or empowers us. What resonates with us. Authors always- always- put part of themselves into their work, and readers will respond to that, whether the note is discordant or not. I love stories, and I believe in their power to connect, illuminate, and heal.

TL;DR I eat books for breakfast, comics for lunch, and animation for dinner.
